As I stepped into the vibrant halls of the Nepal Coffee Expo & Summit, I could feel the electric atmosphere buzzing with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the excited chatter of coffee enthusiasts. I was eager to immerse myself in the rich coffee culture, witness captivating competitions, and explore the myriad stalls showcasing everything from exotic coffees to cutting-edge brewing machines.
The Nepal Coffee Expo & Summit 2023, held from 17th to 20th June in the beautiful city of Kathmandu, proved to be a coffee lover’s paradise. The event spanned four days, packed with a diverse range of activities and experiences. From panel discussions on sustainability in coffee farming, innovation & technology, women empowerment, and digital marketing solutions to captivating barista competitions and the thrilling latte art championship, there was something for every coffee aficionado.
The first day kicked off with panel discussions featuring industry experts, coffee farmers, and environmentalists. Topics ranged from the impact of climate change on coffee production, sustainable farming practices, Government policies, Taxes & VAT , and ethical sourcing. It was inspiring to witness passionate discussions centred around preserving Nepal’s unique biodiversity while ensuring the growth of its thriving coffee industry. The presence of dignitaries from the Nepal Ministry and the NTCBD (National Tea & Coffee Board of Nepal) added a sense of importance and credibility to these discussions.
Moving through the bustling expo floor, I found myself mesmerized by the artistry and skill on display in the barista competitions. Talented baristas from around the country showcased their expertise, creating intricate designs and pouring flawlessly balanced shots. The intense competition and the judges’ discerning eyes created an atmosphere of both excitement and anticipation.
Next, I made my way to the latte art championship, where baristas transformed simple cups of coffee into stunning works of art. The delicate swirls, heart shapes, and intricate patterns formed on the surface of the lattes were a testament to the baristas’ creativity and dexterity. It was a visual delight, and I found myself cheering for each participant as they poured their heart and soul into their craft. The brewing event was a highlight of the expo where renowned baristas shared their brewing techniques and tips with the eager audience.
As a panelist, I had the privilege to discuss the vital role of digital marketing in elevating the coffee industry, fostering stronger ties between India and Nepal through coffee, and promoting women empowerment. It was an enlightening experience sharing insights on these significant topics with fellow coffee enthusiasts and industry professionals at the Nepal Coffee Expo & Summit
No coffee expo would be complete without a cupping session, and the Nepal Coffee Expo & Summit did not disappoint. Experienced cuppers guided participants through a sensory journey, where we evaluated coffees based on their aroma, acidity, body, and flavor notes. It was a truly immersive experience, as we delved into the nuances of each coffee, appreciating the distinct characteristics that made them unique.
As I explored the numerous stalls at the expo, I was astounded by the range of products and services on display. From rare and exotic coffee beans sourced from different regions of Nepal to state-of-the-art brewing machines and equipment, the expo catered to every aspect of the coffee industry. Stall owners were eager to share their knowledge and expertise, offering samples and engaging in passionate conversations about their products.
The Nepal Coffee Expo & Summit 2023 left an indelible mark on my coffee journey. It was not just an event; it was a celebration of Nepalese coffee culture, a platform for education and exchange, and a testament to the growing significance of Nepal’s coffee industry on the global stage. I left the expo with a newfound appreciation for the art and science behind every cup of coffee and a deeper understanding of the efforts and passion that go into creating the perfect cuppa and an unwavering admiration for the remarkable individuals who dedicate themselves to crafting the perfect brew.
